Patna : Nishant Kumar, son of incumbent Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, on Saturday held a meeting with senior leaders and young MLAs of the Janata Dal (United) at the residence of the party’s National Working President Sanjay Kumar Jha.
Nishant Kumar is scheduled to formally join the party on Sunday, the JD(U) confirmed.
During the meeting, party leaders discussed future strategies and the way forward for the party as Nitish Kumar is set to move to the Centre with a seat in the Rajya Sabha. The development comes amid a major political transition for the party.
On March 5, Nitish Kumar filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha, signalling the end of his long tenure as Chief Minister of Bihar.
Nishant’s entry into active politics also marks a notable shift in Nitish Kumar’s earlier stance against dynastic politics. However, JD(U) leader Neeraj Kumar said that during a meeting at the Chief Minister’s residence, Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh and MP Sanjay Jha suggested that Nishant Kumar should join state politics.
“Union Minister Lalan Singh and MP Sanjay Jha suggested that Nishant Kumar should enter the party, and the party enthusiastically welcomed the suggestion. Hence, Nishant Kumar will be joining the party tomorrow. He has accepted the proposal and will also undertake a political tour across the state,” Neeraj Kumar said on Friday, without clarifying Nishant’s exact role in state politics.
Nishant, a software engineer and alumnus of Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, has largely maintained a low profile so far. However, there is growing speculation that he could be appointed as a Deputy Chief Minister in a new NDA government or take on a key leadership role within the party, especially as both Nitish Kumar and Sanjay Jha are expected to represent JD(U) in the Upper House of Parliament.
