Guwahati : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday released its first list of candidates for the Assam Assembly elections, announcing 88 names. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will contest from Jalukbari.
In a notable move, Pradyut Bordoloi—who joined the BJP from Congress just a day earlier—has been fielded from Dispur. Former Assam Congress president Bhupen Bora has been given a ticket from Bihpuria.
Meanwhile, the BJP also announced its second list of candidates for the Kerala Assembly elections, naming 39 candidates. With this, the party has declared a total of 86 candidates across two lists for Kerala.
A meeting of the BJP’s Central Election Committee was held in Delhi on Wednesday to finalize candidates for the upcoming assembly elections in Assam and Puducherry. The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On the opposition side, senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge held discussions regarding the Puducherry elections.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor clarified that he is not a contender for the chief minister’s post and will not be contesting the elections, stating that the CM should be chosen from among elected legislators.
In West Bengal, former Trinamool Congress leader Humayun Kabir announced that his party, the Amra Bangali Unnayan Party (AJUP), will contest 182 seats in the state assembly elections. Kabir was expelled from the All India Trinamool Congress last year.
