New Delhi : The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, granting Amaravati legal status as the sole and permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh.
The bill was introduced by Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai and was approved through a voice vote after more than an hour of debate in the House.
Earlier in the day, proceedings were disrupted as opposition MPs protested against the proposed amendment to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). Members raised slogans demanding the withdrawal of the bill.
Speaker Om Birla urged lawmakers to maintain order, but opposition members continued their protest, standing in their seats.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju clarified that the FCRA Amendment Bill would not be taken up for discussion in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The bill, which seeks changes to the foreign funding regulation law, was introduced in the House on March 25.
