New Delhi : An Assam Police team reached the Delhi residence of Congress leader Pawan Khera at around 12 noon on Tuesday, following an FIR filed in connection with remarks he made about the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
According to reports, Khera was not present at his residence when the police team arrived. Assam Police officials are currently waiting to question him, with Delhi Police also present at the location.
The action comes two days after Khera alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the Chief Minister’s wife, held passports from Egypt, Antigua and Barbuda, and the UAE. Both Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife have dismissed the allegations as false.
Commenting on the raid in Delhi, Chief Minister Sarma said on Tuesday that Khera had “fled Guwahati yesterday” and claimed he later left for Hyderabad. He added that the law will take its course.
Riniki Bhuyan Sarma had filed an FIR on Monday regarding the allegations.
Polling in Assam is scheduled for 9 April, while election campaigning is set to end at 5 pm today.
Assam Chief Minister and BJP candidate from Jalukbari Assembly constituency, Himanta Biswa Sarma, said the party was confident of winning around 100 seats.
Referring to Khera’s statement, Sarma said that Khera had left Guwahati yesterday morning and later, when police reached his Delhi residence, had reportedly moved to Hyderabad.
