Bharatpur : A jeweller was shot dead and robbed in Bharatpur’s Nadbai area, triggering outrage among locals and traders, with police launching a multi-district manhunt for the accused.
The victim, Yogendra Chopra (45), was returning home on his scooter on Wednesday evening when two assailants on a motorcycle opened fire near his residence, just about 100 meters away. He was hit in the neck and died on the spot. The attackers then fled with a bag containing gold and silver ornaments.
Following the incident, traders staged protests, carrying the body through the market and demonstrating outside the police station. After the postmortem on Thursday, the body was handed over to the family and later cremated.
Nadbai MLA Jagat Singh visited the bereaved family and assured strict action. He announced a reward of ₹1 lakh for information leading to the arrest of the killers and also declared financial assistance of ₹5 lakh for the family, along with efforts to secure ₹6 lakh in government compensation. He further said he would request the Chief Minister to support the victim’s son in pursuing an MBBS degree.
Expressing anger over the crime, the MLA said the culprits would be caught and warned of severe consequences, vowing justice for the victim.
Superintendent of Police Digant Anand stated that the attack appeared to have been carried out after prior surveillance. CCTV footage has captured suspects on a motorcycle, and police teams from four districts have been deployed to track them down.
Meanwhile, traders have issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the administration, demanding immediate arrests. They warned of a sit-in protest outside the SDM office if the accused are not apprehended within the deadline.
