Mumbai : A major mishap was narrowly avoided in the Wardha district of Maharashtra on Tuesday morning when a coach of the GT Express (Grant Trunk Express) caught fire. Fortunately, no passengers were injured. While the exact cause of the blaze has not yet been confirmed, officials suspect a short circuit. Railway authorities have ordered a detailed investigation into the incident.
According to railway sources, train number 12616 was travelling from New Delhi to Chennai (Tambaram) and had departed from Nagpur earlier in the morning. At around 11:09 AM, as the train neared Sindi Railway Station in Wardha district, smoke was noticed coming from the last coach.
The fire erupted in the final SLR (Seating-cum-Luggage Rack) coach.
Train Halted Promptly, Coach Detached
Sanjay Mule, spokesperson for Central Railway, said the train was immediately brought to a halt between Sindi and Tuljapur. As a precautionary measure, the affected coach was swiftly detached, and the fire brigade was alerted.
Railway officials confirmed that all passengers were safe. Those travelling in the affected coach were evacuated without incident, preventing what could have been a serious accident.
