Washington DC : Suspicious drones have been spotted flying over a key U.S. military installation in Washington, raising fresh security concerns. According to The Washington Post, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth are currently residing within Fort Lesley J. McNair—the same base where the unidentified drones were seen.
Sources familiar with the matter said the drones have not yet been identified, and their origin remains unclear. A senior official noted that security was already on high alert due to ongoing tensions following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.
Over the past 10 days, multiple drones were observed over the base during a single night, prompting authorities to tighten security measures. The situation also led to an emergency meeting at the White House to assess the potential threat.
Global alert and heightened military security
The U.S. has issued a worldwide security advisory for its embassies and increased vigilance at several domestic military installations. Security levels at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst and MacDill Air Force Base have been raised to “Charlie,” indicating a credible threat of potential attack. The only higher level, “Delta,” is reserved for situations where an attack is imminent or already underway.
Following the drone sightings over Fort McNair, officials also considered relocating Rubio and Hegseth to a safer location. However, no decision has been made yet, and both leaders remain at the base.
